Free Ride World Tour Comes To Mammoth
56
male and female skiers and snowboarders are soon to challenge
the first ever contest of the Free Ride World Tour on the grueling
McGee Mountain in Mammoth Mountain, California, Wednesday January
23 January. North Face and Nissan will support the
Mammoth Challenge as well as two other events of the Tour which
will be held in Europe. Mammoth Mountain is the home town of legendary
snowboarder Steve Klassen – 5-time
winner of the Verbier Xtreme. Steve Klassen is also event coordinator
for this first contest of the Free Ride World Tour guaranteeing a
world class event for riders, public and media on the challenging
McGee Mountain, 10 871 feet / 3313 meters above sea level.
This is the first time a free ride contest is held on the McGee, located
about 10 km south of the resort Mammoth Mountain. Entrants will have to helicopter to the top with spectators viewing from Crowley Lake Drive. The site, known for
the first fixed lift in the area back in the 1930’s, moved 40
years present location. The average steepness of the McGee Mountain
is around 35 degrees. The run is long and demanding for the riders
with its 1000 vertical meters. It has a natural quarter pipe which
runs about half the length of the mountain and features numerous lips,
gulleys and jumps.
Ice Rink
It was delayed a bit because of our weather, but no one is complaining
about the snow fall except the Parks & Rec team that had to shovel
it off the rink. Opening was on Monday January 7. And, while skating
took place at night, it really wasn't all that cold. Fun had by all
and we encourage you to give it a try when you are in town. Very cool.
Really.
