Gregg Simas
a big believer in the web, hired the City Concierge to build their
new website and help launch their new reservation service. You can
see the site at
Grumpy's Mammoth. The site design incorporates the campy
fun of old Grumpy along with the sports bar theme. You can even
order Grumpy Wear online.

our navigation to include a new two click button to accommodate
the growing interest our site has had from real estate shoppers.

| Reminder To Do |

Visitors are
expecting to find a "Winter Wonderland". Be sure to decorate
with lots of lights. Leave them up until spring. It helps create a
special feeling about Mammoth that we are "winter wonderful"
all season long and a great getaway from palm trees and sand. |

December 2003
For those who I haven't personally met since starting the City Concierge
welcome, and to those whom I have been working with, this is the first
of the marketing newsletters I have been speaking about. My goal in starting
the City Concierge is to not only help increase your cash flow through
better marketing, but to help educate so that marketing dollars pay off.
We all make stupid marketing mistakes. Jay Chiat of Chiat Day, the creator
of some of the most memorable commercials (Barbie driving the 300zx Nissan)
said "I know half of my advertising dollars are wasted
I just
don't know which half." Hopefully we can all laugh at our mistakes,
and use them as a way to improve.
With competition increasing, and the customer base staying
roughly the same, we must use every trick in the book to grow our own
customer base larger while developing loyalty. Whether that is using local
media to remind customers you exist, or go out of the area to influence
new bodies, get out the heavy artillery to fight! The tour operator has
been displaced by the Internet and the choices for low cost hotels, airlines
and travel on the Internet is daunting, and it damages the profit margin
of our business. While the largest Internet portal sites sell based on
discounts, there remains a larger group of travelers who pay for customer
service. (Or are too fat and lazy to self-service!) Service makes for
repeat visits. Just look at our local businesses who have survived and
those out of the area that have noticeably higher prices for similar goods,
but deliver on the promise of service such as Gelson's Supermarkets, or
Nordstroms.
Enough of the introductions, now for a few tips. If
at anytime you don't want to learn how to make your own "secret sauce"
for success, feel free to unsubscribe. The link is at the bottom. It won't
hurt my feelings, I'll just write about you in the next issue

MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS
In the phrase show business, "show" is the
smaller of the two words. The most important aspect of your business is
the business. To improve your impact and lasting impression on your customer,
focus your efforts on what your key business promises are, and deliver.
What kind of messages are you sending if you are
a lodging reservation
company that sells real estate? High-end restaurant that sells scrambled
eggs to fisherman? Or a Laundromat that makes and sells donuts? When you
shop in Blockbuster for example, is there any question what kind of store
you are in? Focus your efforts on what counts in your business.
Along with focus, comes hiring other professionals
to "show" you how to improve the jobs you guess at or are not
skilled. You wouldn't go to the shoemaker to have your teeth cleaned,
so don't hire a bookkeeper to be your CPA, or a friend with a computer
to develop your mailing list. The bookkeeper won't be able to represent
you in a tax audit and your friend will only be creating junk mail. Hire
the right professional that does the job you need done, so you can continually
focus on yours. They may charge a bit more than you're accustom to paying,
but the job done right the first time saves money. This kind of investment
does pay and shows you are minding your own business. Next time
stupid marketing we all do. |
THE WEB
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is fast becoming an
art that needs all of our attention. SEO is the ability to tweak and re-tweak
your website's meta data, links, page content, and graphics to get higher
placement in the listings. If you're not on the first few pages of relevant
results on a search, then you are not getting the most out of your website
investment.
To prove how effective it can be, go to Google or Yahoo
and type in keywords "mammoth information". See where the City
Concierge comes up. We have been able to raise our own placement to be
in position 1, 2, 3 for Google, Yahoo and AOL.
But it doesn't end just after one round of SEO. It
is ever ongoing as the search engines constantly change their algorithms
(how they compute results). Search engines as used here refer to all search
engines, which include indexes (Yahoo & AOL), and other listing services.
To be accurate, there are only 10 search engines.
What makes this process difficult however, is that 1) Each
search engine uses different criteria for their ratings; 2) Too many of
the same keywords, or meta tags actually lowers the results for some,
while repetition raises your rank for others; 3) Links from page relevant
sites make a difference. Yes, the process can is arduous and time consuming.
There are several ways to go including free services, low cost submission
services, manually submitting, paid consultants, and software. Next time,
we'll look at what works and what doesn't, and why paying to submit to
300 search engines does nothing for you. Just remember you have to do
something, or no one will find you.
SECRET SAUCE
Quick name a fast food hamburger chain
Try again; name a family
oriented movie studio. The names that come to mind are due to branding.
Branding is the art of creating a lasting impression in the customers
mind. Every point of contact you have with your customer is part of your
brand. This makes the customer predisposed to your services when they
need to make a decision. This extends beyond a logo design, the color
of paint on your building, or how you greet your customers. Disney is
a master. Ever been in one of their stores? Seen the catalog? Every item
helps to generate a specific lasting impression so when you think kids
and family, you think Disney.
Creating that predisposed persuasion happens when the values
associated with a business ring true with your own personal values. The
imagery - your logo, an advertisement, brochure, or website tie those
values to the impressionable imagery.
For
example, what values do you associate with this symbol?
Defining those values for your business and defining
your customer is the first step in creating what makes you different from
your competition. Make a list of the values your company/customer currently
represents. Eliminate generic words such as "everybody", "a
skier", and as you shrink your focus, your audience becomes more
clear and actually gets bigger. Disney doesn't appeal to everyone, neither
does Target, yet their audiences are huge. You will find that once you
know your customer, and what they expect of you, growing your business
will be easier. Next time, putting the new focus to work. |
